Teaching



Sarah has built up a wealth of experience during the past eighteen years of her career as a pedagogue: from beginners to conservatorium students, from individual lessons to large groups, at all ages. This includes masterclasses, one-off workshops and trajectories, concert preparation, conference presentations and long-term teaching. She has taught all over the world, and it equally at home across a wide range of styles and disciplines. 



Current work

Sarah is currently ‘Recorder Professor Specialising in Contemporary Music’ at the Royal College of Music in London, appointed in 2022.

She also frequently travels all over the world to deliver masterclasses, courses and tailored workshops.

Recently she has been a visiting tutor at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire UK, LUCA Conservatoire Leuven, Glimåkra Blockflöjtsdagar Sweden, UK Recorder Summer School, the Britten-Pears programme, London International Festival of Early Music, Wellington Recorder Society in New Zealand, Recorder Courses Lyme UK, Blokfluitdagen Mechelen in Belgium, Mollenhauer Centre in Fulda Germany, Centro Suzuki in Sao Paulo Brazil, and as musical director on the short film ‘Recorder Rewrite’ in Singapore.


Availability

Sarah is available for masterclasses, courses and workshops anywhere in the world. This can be tailored to a wide range of levels, repertoire choices and techniques. Examples from this season have been: palindromes and musical games; recorder technique; improvisation; 17th century sonatas; contemporary techniques; practice plans; performance and stage fright; recorder orchestra; and 8-foot playing.

Lessons can be taught in English or Dutch.

Sarah worked at the SoundLAB in the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ Amsterdam from 2011-22. Here she gave group workshops on improvisation and composition, using a unique collection of newly invented instruments.
